http://www.iflscience.com/space/milky-ways-most-mysterious-star
One scientist described this as "something you would expect an alien civilization to build."
The pattern of dips indicates that the star is orbited by a large, irregular-shaped mass. If it were orbiting a young star, this mass might be a protoplanetary disc, but KIC 8462852 is not a young star. We would also expect to see the presence of dust emitting infrared light, which hasn’t been observed. So what is this orbiting mass? |

http://www.iflscience.com/space/white-house-releases-strategic-plan-prepare-major-solar-storms
The worst solar storm to hit the Earth in recorded history happened in 1859. Known as the Carrington Event, it generated auroras as far south as Cuba and caused havoc with the primitive electrical system of the time, generating fires in telegraph stations. It’s estimated that such a large solar storm will occur roughly every 150 years or so. If one of a similar magnitude were to hit the Earth now, with a society much more dependent on electronics and technology, it would undoubtedly have catastrophic consequences.

http://www.iflscience.com/space/giving-mars-would-be-disastrous-nasa-chief-tells-iflscience
“Getting humans to Mars gives us the ability and the knowledge that we can comfortably move to another place in the Solar System should Earth become uninhabitable some day,” he says. “While it won’t save us when the Sun finally collapses [in 5 billion years], the journey to Mars will be the precursor for interplanetary and, way down the road, intergalactic travel.”
“Our relationship with Russia right now is tenuous,” said Bolden. “Our relationship with Roscosmos is beautiful. The way we cooperate with them, the way we train with them in Houston and Moscow and Star City, we launch out of Baikonur, that’s the model that you want for the future of humanity.”
While the Curiosity rover continues to find evidence for past habitability on the surface of Mars, upcoming missions like the Mars 2020 rover and the Europa Flyby Mission will bring us closer than ever to a detection of life elsewhere in the Solar System, while missions like the Kepler space telescope continue to search for potentially habitable planets beyond.

BOWIE GETS LIGHTNING BOLT-SHAPED CONSTELLATION IN MEMORIAM

“Studio Brussels asked us to give Bowie a unique place in the galaxy. Referring to his various albums, we chose seven stars—Sigma Librae, Spica, Alpha Virginis, Zeta Centauri, SAA 204 132, and the Beta Sigma Octantis Trianguli Australis—in the vicinity of Mars,” said MIRA employee Philippe Mollet in a statement. “The constellation is a copy of the iconic Bowie lightning and was recorded at the exact time of his death.”
